How to Read Your Power Bill

Power bills are one of our household expenses that most of us pay little attention to because we don't feel we can do much about it. Not true! Depending upon your utility company you will notice many charges on your bill that you have absolutely no control of and one item that you do. Don't waste time on the items you can't control and focus on the one item you can control, kw consumption. A typical power bill will include some or all of the following: franchise fee, excise tax, sur. tax, and electric meter charges. As fuel costs rise, you can expect your power bill to rise drastically. Here is what you can do in your home to save:

Air conditioning - Probably the largest kw consumer in your home. If you have not updated your units in the last 5 years, you should seriously consider it. The A/C world has been revolutionized recently and units are now available that will cut your consumption in half.

Water heaters - The newer units on the market are "quick recovery" which means you can have hot water in 10-15 minutes. Install a pilot light switch that controls your water heater. If the light is "on", you are heating water.

Timers and motion sensors - Great for controlling lights, very inconvenient for water heaters.

Obviously there are many other energy saving tips available that can save you money and save our planet. Many power companies provide a free energy audit program that can be of help to you. If you decide you want to be proactive with your energy costs, be sure to track your kw consumption monthly. This is the one thing you can control.
